Annapolis: ¿por qué no soy optimista?

martes, noviembre 27, 2007

Atención al morro de los amiguetes saudíes:

speaking in Paris just hours before his scheduled arrival in the U.S., Prince Saud warned Israelis that they would have no peace until Israel withdrew from Arab territories captured in the 1967 war. Saud, who will be the highest ranking Saudi to ever attend a peace conference with the Jewish state, added that he would not shake the hand of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert or make a symbolic visit to Jerusalem before a peace deal. "The hand that has been extended to us has been a fist so far," he said. He warned Israelis against seeking a surrender, adding, "We don't need a Versailles for the Arab world, a peace that will only be an instigator of future wars."

What the Saudis Want from Annapolis - Yahoo! News

No haber atacado...

No soy nada optimista.

Annapolis folly: Palestinian shopkeeper invites customers to smash souvenir mugs h/t Tailrank:

In a symbol of fragile hopes for this week’s Middle East peace conference at Annapolis, one Palestinian shopkeeper is selling souvenir mugs for the event — complete with instructions to smash them if talks break down.

Under a dove and olive branch motif, the mugs carry the message in English: “Please keep this souvenir, but in case of the conference’s failure; you are only asked to break the mug”.

From The Augean Stables:

The Annapolis conference has brought out the same voices who cling stubbornly to beliefs that were proven wrong by Oslo, Lebanon, and Gaza. These beliefs are based on faith in the face of facts- faith that the Palestinians want a normal, functioning democracy just like the Israelis, faith that a peace process will cause Palestinian leaders to relinquish dreams of Israel’s destruction, faith that Palestinian leaders’ actions and statements are not indicators of what their true intentions.

We express our determination to bring an end to bloodshed, suffering and decades of conflict between our peoples; to usher in a new era of peace, based on freedom, security, justice, dignity, respect and mutual recognition; to propagate a culture of peace and nonviolence; to confront terrorism and incitement, whether committed by Palestinians or Israelis," the statement said here.

Palestinian killed as police break up West Bank rallies.

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AFP) - Palestinian police killed one man in the West Bank on Tuesday as it broke up rallies against a US peace meeting, while Hamas supporters in Gaza rallied in force against the conference.

Palestinian security forces fired into the air and pummelled demonstrators with batons as they dispersed protests throughout the occupied West Bank against the meeting opening in the US city of Annapolis.

So will this conference finally find a resolution to the conflict? Will it even outline the path to such a resolution? Not unless the Arabs have finally resolved to live in peace with Israel. As Middle East scholar Bernard Lewis put it yesterday, the conflict is either existential or a border problem. If the latter, then this kind of conference makes sense, and should resolve the issues relatively quickly. If the former — if the Arabs simply cannot live with a Jewish state in the region — then all of the conferences in the world won’t solve the underlying problem.

Sooner or later we’ll have to face the fact that the Israeli/Palestinian problem wouldn’t exist if the Arabs weren’t the leading exporters of terrorism in the world. When the stated goal of one group is the extinction of the other, expecting reasonable, honest discourse from them is a waste of time and energy.
