Vitoria (Basque Country, Spain) will open its 4th mosque against the will of the neighbourhood. The group of Moroccans who pushed for the mosque have won against the pressure of the neighbours and the shop owners of the San Cristóbal's quarter.
When they became aware of the fact that this was a real project, they began a campaign to ask for signatures against the mosque's building. But the neighbours' association blocked the initiative, saying that the "cultural differences" shouldn't "be considered to create prejudices" and atributed the protests to lack of information. They only asked for the normal and logical fulfillment of law as applied to any of these places of worship.
NOTE FOR INTERNATIONAL READERS: One of the movements been played both by Catalonian and Basque Governments is to ensure that people speak in Catalan and Basque languages. So they are not making it easy for South American to immigrate to those parts of Spain, as they would naturally communicate in Spanish, and making it easy for Islamic immigrants to move there. El Ayuntamiento acaba de conceder la licencia a los promotores del templo, un grupo de marroquís [tenía entendido que el plural de marroquí era "marroquíes". ..]que ha vencido a la presión de algunos vecinos y comerciantes de la zona de San Cristóbal contrarios al centro de oración. La noticia sorprendió al barrio el pasado mes de julio. Fue el propio Consistorio quien informó a residentes y minoristas de la solicitud tramitada por varias familias árabes para abrir una mezquita en la zona.
La reacción fue inmediata. Vecinos temerosos de que el templo les ocasionase «molestias», «conflictos con personas de otra cultura» e incluso «problemas de aparcamiento» empezaron a recoger firmas para tratar de frenar el proyecto.
No lo consiguieron. Las asociaciones de vecinos se desvincularon de la iniciativa. En su opinión, las diferencias culturales no debían esgrimirse para «crear prejuicios» y atribuyeron la preocupación a la «falta» de información. Tan sólo pidieron que el centro religioso cumpla con las «lógicas y normales» normas de convivencia como «cualquier otro local».
