A culture of peace should permeate all aspects of life: religious formation, education, interpersonal relations and the arts in their diverse forms. To this end, scholastic books should be revised in order not to contain material which may offend the religious sentiments of other believers, at times through the erroneous presentation of dogmas, morals or history of other religions.

Nabil, who used the blogger name Kareem Amer, had sharply criticized Al-Azhar on his Web log, calling it "the university of terrorism" and accusing it of suppressing free thought. He also often criticized Mubarak's regime on the blog.
In one post, he said Al-Azhar University "stuffs its students' brains and turns them into human beasts. teaching them that there is not place for differences in this life."
He was a vocal critic of conservative Muslims and in other posts described Mubarak's regime as a "symbol of dictatorship."

A throng of religious clerics and parliamentarians gathered at the People's Assembly's Religious Affairs Committee on Monday to debate the role of Al-Azhar in fighting extremist religious thinking and blasphemous ideas.
The meeting was spurred by the heated exchange of accusations and counter-accusations during the past three weeks between secularist intellectuals and Al-Azhar, caused by the re-publishing of an allegedly blasphemous novel A Banquet for Seaweed by Syrian author Haydar Haydar.
Ahmed Omar Hashem, president of Al-Azhar University and chairman of parliament's Religious Affairs Committee, stunned intellectuals by taking the Ministry of Culture to task and urging that copies of the novel be burned. The intellectuals, in turn, accused Al-Azhar of devoting its attention to the confiscation of books, instead of fighting religious extremism.

At issue is a 90-second segment from “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure,” which depicts Dio Brando, a villain, picking up a Quran from a bookshelf and apparently examining it as he orders the execution of the hero and his friends.
(...) Sheikh Abdul Hamid Attrash, chairman of the Fatwa (religious edict)
Committee at Al-Azhar, the highest Sunni authority based in Cairo, dismissed the cartoon as an insult to Islam.
‘‘This scene depicts Muslims as terrorists, which is not true at all,’’ he said. ‘‘This is an insult to the religion and the producers would be considered to be enemies of Islam.’’

The government's reliance on Al-Azhar to confiscate or otherwise restrict publication of books that "insult Islam," but no one confiscates books that insult other religions. In fact, as listed in the 2007 US Dept. of State report, the government specifically allows and distributes publications calling Christians "infidels."
