Syrian-born Monzer al-Kassar, 62, and a co-defendant, Luis Felipe Moreno Godoy, were convicted of conspiring over a four-month period last year to try to sell millions of dollars worth of heavy weaponry to Colombian militants.
(...) U.S. authorities said al-Kassar was willing to sell surface-to-air missile systems, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, thousands of machine guns and millions of rounds of ammunition to Colombian rebels.
(...) An indictment unsealed last year said al-Kassar had provided military equipment to violent factions in Nicaragua, Brazil, Cyprus, Bosnia, Croatia, Somalia, Iran and Iraq. It said his customers included known terrorist organizations determined to stage "attacks on United States interests and United States nationals."
Al-Kassar was acquitted in Spain of supplying assault rifles used by Palestinian militants in the 1985 hijacking of the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro. The hijackers killed 69-year-old New Yorker Leon Klinghoffer, dumping his body and wheelchair overboard.
The Church should see the Cuban situation as one that clearly shows the always-present opportunity for a people, a culture and a nation towards faithful conversion. The seeds of a nascent and free Cuban society are planted. Now the leadership and guidance of the Holy Spirit, through Benedict presents a chance for a new Church presence in the restored New World and announcing spiritual freedom to an island emerging from Communist atheistic darkness.
NECESARIO VERLO.

So Cuba has announced that Castro has resigned. This should be the first time that a corpse resigns in all history but of course, after nearly 50 years of Communist propaganda and no independent information in the island, we can safely say that it will be perhaps long till we know what is the exact time when he died or is going to die...
Anyway, the future for Cuba can be:
a transition to democracy, similar to Chile after Pinochet or Spain after Franco. But that's much easier if the dictatorship has been of a far-right-winger than if it has been of a communist.
a pan-American alliance with the "socialism of the XXIst century". Precisely, Castro has been the inspiration of Chávez and has good relations with the other two more important representatives of the movement in South America, Bolivian Evo Morales and Ecuatorian Correa.
an evolution towards a Chinese/Vietnamese model of economical capitalism and a total abscence of civil freedoms or Human Rights.
Of course, the most desirable of all of them is without doubt, the first one. But we can't rule out the other two, specially in the present moment, when the Chinese allure grows around the world. Everything depends in the continuity of the Communist Party in charge of the island: if it fails, the transition would be much easier. On the contrary, if the communism is maintained in the area, an evolution towards a democratic regime where freedom and Human Rights are recognised and respected would be nearly impossible.
Anyway, looks like Raúl Castro has asked Brazilian Lula da Silva to help with transition and not to Hugo Chávez, something which, at first, can sound promising because Lula insisted on the respect to Human Rights.
Communist China has already expressed its wish of Castro recovering from his illness and of maintaining the "bonds of fellowship" the two nations have between them. North Korea dictator Kim has praised Castro as NK closest comrade, something which, considering the richesses they have "earned" during their mandates while their citizens have miserable lives is more than understandable. But well, that is something normal, considering that NK and Cuba are both Communist states. What is absolutely uncomprehensible is the support that an important part of the international left (even the self-called democratic left) has given to Castro and his Communist regime:
Many commentators noted this tendency of the Left to whitewash the crimes of Marxist tyrants, and to overlook completely the human rights abuses, the political prisoners, and the death camps. In 1981 Paul Hollander wrote a bit of a classic in this regard: Political Pilgrims: Travels of Western Intellectuals to the Soviet Union, China and Cuba. In it he documented the duplicity of the Left: denigrating pluralism and democracy at home while lauding totalitarianism and tyranny abroad.
Jeane Kirkpatrick penned a great volume in 1980 entitled, Dictatorships and Double Standards which also addressed this theme. She rightly asked why Western leftist intellectuals can criticise a free and democratic West while praising the vile and oppressive Marxist regimes.
And the religious Left was also sucked into such double standards. In 1985 Lloyd Billingsley wrote The Generation That Knew Not Josef: A Critique of Marxism and the Religious Left. In that incisive volume he critiqued those of the religious left who slammed America and the West while romanticising socialist dictatorships and extolling Marxist nightmare states.
Cuba, as I say, is a good case in point. The number of sycophantic admirers of the Castro regime has been depressing to behold. Sure, the former Batista regime was corrupt, and was no paragon of virtue. But things got much worse after the 1959 revolution, with thousands of Batista supporters executed, just for starters. From then on it was 50 years of tyranny and misery for most Cubans. (A MUST READ).
Spanish Socialist Government is the best example (for our shame) of this policy...
Anyway, the pan-American alliance Chávez has dreamed of, has of course, as main invited guest, the Castro's brothers' Cuba, elevated to the real influence and mentors of Chávez in international policy. Chávez, wasting the Venezuelan petrodollars, is financing every revolt that happens in South American countries. It's important to note that the machines used for counting votes in Florida in 2000 elections, belonged to several companies, one of which belongs to Chávez Government. And now they have proposed to build an ALBA Army, with very obscure purposes.
But that is not the only way Cuba can influence international politics: the most interesting one is the use of international organizations to block any attempt to oblige the Communist Cuban Government to respect Human Rights and begin the way to democracy. While at the same time, they are imposing their non-existent view of Human Rights on countries which have laws to respect them which are fulfilled. The election of Cuba for the HR Commission on the UN is one good example of this.
Will Catholic Church play a similar role in Cuba as it played with the Communist European countries in the 80's? We will have to wait and see.
Lastly, the Communist Cuba has freed four political prisoners but on condition of going out of Cuba. They are in Spain and have told their story to the MSM, though it has not been published by many. Video above (in Spanish).
