Australia's Labor party is confident of victory in parliamentary elections which would see a change in government for the first time in eleven years. Partial results broadcast by ABC state media give the Labor party led by Kevin Judd just over 52 percent of the vote while the Liberal-National coalition of Prime Minister John Howard has around 47 percent. Rudd has pledged to withdraw Australian troops from Iraq and sign the Kyoto Protocol. Howard, who trailed in opinion polls all year banked on a strong economy and promises of tax cuts. Howard stands to lose his own seat of Bennelong and would be the first Prime Minister in 78 years to do so. Unemployment in Australia is at a 33-year low.

John Howard ha reconocido la derrota. El Gobierno conservador se había mantenido durante 11 años en Australia.
El líder laborista, Kevin Rudd, ha anunciado sus prioridades:
Kevin Rudd, ha prometido organizar sus prioridades a su llegada al poder con la firma del Protocolo de Kyoto, algo a lo que Howard se ha negado durante todo su mandato, y ha anticipado que retirará a los 550 soldados australianos de Irak, dejando en su lugar a 1.100 efectivos que encargarán de vigilar la seguridad en el país.
Kevin Rudd, has announced he will sign the Kyoto protocol and will end the mission of the 550 soldiers in Irak, leaving in their place 1,100 men in charge of security of the country.
Lo que no ha dicho es quiénes serán esos "efectivos": ¿policias? ¿militares? ¿guardias?
Su primer discurso:
“I will be a prime minister for all Australians. A prime minister for indigenous Australians, Australians who have been born here and who have come here from afar.... A prime minister for our cities and our towns.”
Seré un Primer Ministro para todos los australianos. Un primer ministro para los australianos indígenas, australianos que hayan nacido aquí y para los que hayan venido de lejos... UN primer ministro para nuestras ciudades y pueblos.
