Obama ahora quiere controlar internet

The Cybersecurity Act of 2009 (PDF) da al Presidente la abilidad de "declarar una emergencia de ciberseguridad" y cerrar o limitar el tráfico de internet in cualquier red de información crítica con la seguridad nacional. El Proyecto de Ley no define lo que es una "red de información crítica" o una "emergencia de ciberseguridad". Esa definición se deja al presidente.

El proyecto no sólo añade poder al Presidente. También concede al Secretario de Comercio "acceso a todos los datos relevantes que tengan que ver con redes ("críticas"), sin necesidad de ninguna norma legal, regulación, regla o política que lo restrinja. Esto significa que se puede monitorizar o acceder cualquier dato en cualquier red pública o privada sin necesidad de cumplir ningún ley sobre privacidad de los internautas.

Lo han planteado los Senadores Rockefeller (demócrata) y Olympia Snowe (republicana). Viene más información (en inglés) en el enlace. Y es que (pensarán) si Obama es casi Dios, debe conocer lo que piensa cada entidad planetaria. De los marcianos que le vinieron a ver a sus mítines, todavía no se ha hablado. Pero no tienen si no que hablar con nuestra admirada Carmen Calvo, que ella enseguida se encarga de la legislación para todos los planetas, porque también hay que conocer importantes cuestiones de seguridad nacional, para que si luego un vulgar Abu Hamza dice a grito pelado en la mezquita "venga, a matar infieles", se le diga que es libertad de expresión, mientras no haya asesinatos en el Reino Unido. Total, que ¿para qué tanta ciberseguridad si cuando hay uno que está activamente llamando a matanzas masivas se le dice que eso no es peligroso? Hasta que pasa claro...

A ello debemos añadir que Obama ha permitido que se puedan incluir como terroristas "grupos e individuos dedicados a una causa en particular tal como oposición al aborto o a la inmigración". (Gracias Alawen por el tip... ;) ).

Página web musulmana laica, por primera vez en España

El dominio www.3almani.org, que en árabe significa laico, nació en España en marzo de 2007 "con la intención de mostrar que el laicismo no es sinónimo de ateísmo, idea muy extendida en el mundo islámico, sino la base de una democracia en la que todos los ciudadanos son iguales ante la ley sean de la religión que sean", según ha señalado uno de los creadores de la página, que pidió ser identificado como Nayi Nasr.
La web, cuya insignia es un faro que alumbra en la oscuridad un mar revuelto y cuyo nombre completo es La red de los árabes laicos, ofrece artículos escritos por árabes de todo el mundo sobre religión, política, filosofía, arte o literatura.
Sin embargo, como asegura el director ejecutivo la Red Árabe para la Información sobre los Derechos Humanos (RAIDH), Yamal Aid, "lo raro de todo esto" y a diferencia de lo que muchos puedan pensar, es que "las paginas web laicas, liberales o que apoyan la democratización tienen muchos más problemas en los países árabes que las páginas religiosas o radicales". 

(...) agrega el director de RAIDH, "después de hablar con los voluntarios de nuestra organización, comprobamos que no estaba censurada sólo en dos países, sino que está prohibida en cinco, Arabia Saudí, Emiratos, Túnez, Bahrein y Siria, con lo que se ha convertido en la página más censurada en el mundo árabe".
Nasr, que reside en España, confiesa que no sólo tienen que lidiar con esta censura, sino también con los ataques de crackers islámicos que con el nombre de Muyahidines del islám en Internet contra el laicismo, bloquearon la página poco después de su nacimiento y la llenaron de acusaciones de impiedad, amenazas y llamadas a la conversión.

A mí no me parece nada raro... Pero es bueno que surjan estas iniciativas, aunque, como se ve, no lo van a tener nada fácil...

El fin de la neutralidad en la red (Act.)

Visto en ABC:

Muchos de los acontecimientos jurídicos que nos afectan suceden en red. El Parlamento Español está a punto de dar comienzo a regular el fin de la neutralidad de esa red en España con el pretexto de salvaguardar los derechos de autor, especialmente del ámbito musical y cinematográfico. Quizá muchos no saben que los derechos civiles, al menos en las sociedades desarrolladas, se basan en información y comunicación. Dado que esa información y comunicación pasa por un medio físico, el cable, ahora confluyen no sólo los intereses de las compañías que son propietarias de ellos, sino de todos los intereses económicos y políticos que saben que el futuro dependerá de dos modelos: de que la red esté abierta o que pueda ser controlada.

Se refiere a una proposición no de ley por la que se quiere que se garantice los derechos de autor en Internet.

El periodista del diario El País ha asegurado, en una entrevista que le han hecho en Buenos Aires, que "por internet han entrado las descalificaciones, las calumnias, los rumores" y ha reclamado nuevamente que haya control en la Red.

Qué cantidad de voces últimamente reclamando el control de la Red, ¿no?

Australia contra el internet libre

Winds of Change.NET: Australia and China versus the free Internet:

 "AUSTRALIA se unirá a China a la hora de incrementar la censura obligatoria de internet según los planes que ha realizado el Govierno Federal.

(...) Varios grupos incluyendo los Administradores de Sistemas Guild  y los Electronic Frontiers de Austrlia han atacado la propuesta, diciendo que eso restringiría de modo injusto el acceso de los australianos a la web, ralentizaría su acceso a internet e incrementaría el precio del acceso a Internet."

David Blue dice que cuando fue a diversas manifestaciones contra la censura en internet durante el gobierno de Howard (propuestas que eran, dicho sea de paso, mucho menos lesivas de la libertad de expresión que la que ahora se produce), manifestaba ser partidario de defender una cláusula sin límites semejante a la que contiene el Bill of Rights americano, que evitaría un descenso por la pendiente sin frenos. Pero que desistió después de que todo el mundo con el que hablaba le miraba en plan "este no anda bien" o simplemente reaccionaban con poca simpatía ante la idea. Al cabo de varias tentativas, incluso desistió de la idea de explicar por qué lo consideraba necesario.

Así que, como él mismo dice, ahora ven todos (o al menos muchos) que van por la pendiente hacia la censura sin freno. Pero ya está el gobierno laborista en el poder y ahora poco pueden hacer...

Los peligros de la declaración de impuestos vía internet

Debido a que las declaraciones de impuestos contienen una gran cantidad de información valiosa y privada, como nombres, direcciones, números de seguridad social y números de cuentas bancarias, los piratas informáticos resurgen en esta época del año.
El número de fraudes relacionados con los impuestos aumenta cada año, lo que indica que los usuarios de Internet deben extremar sus precauciones para minimizar riesgos a la hora de declarar sus impuestos online.

Ya sé que esto no tiene mucho que ver con la temática general del blog, pero como dentro de nada va a llegar la época de presentar las declaraciones del IRPF, es bueno que tengamos en cuenta los consejos que nos dan en esta web si queremos hacer la declaración vía internet. Son consejos muy básicos pero que a algunos se nos pueden olvidar.

El Gobierno chino prohíbe las películas de terror

No, todavía no se ha prohibido a sí mismo...

Las considera perjudiciales para el desarrollo psíquico de niños y adolescentes l Tampoco está permitido rodar filmes de esta temática en el país

China ha prohibido la venta de productos audiovisuales de miedo o misterio con el fin de de "proteger el desarrollo psíquico de los niños y adolescentes del país", según una circular gubernamental de la que se hace eco este jueves el rotativo 'Shanghai Daily'. La medida se suma así a la prohibición ya existente de rodar filmes con esa temática en el país.

De acuerdo con la Administración General de Prensa y Publicaciones, este tipo de productos "incluyen personajes extraños e historias ficticias cuyo único propósito es causar terror". Y el terror, así como la violencia y la crueldad presente en estos artículos, agrega el organismo, resultan extremadamente dañinos para el desarrollo psíquico de los niños.

La circular obliga también la destrucción de los productos ya presentes en el mercado.

Beijing ha lanzado una importante campaña para acabar con todos los productos audiovisuales "vulgares" y potencialmente perjudiciales para sus jóvenes, entre los que se incluyen aquellos de temática ligeramente erótica o, simplemente, cualquier producto considerado subversivo por el Gobierno. Libros y cómics también están sometidos a iguales medidas.

No, si ya con el Gobierno chino tienen suficiente película de terror. Debe ser que no quiere competidores :lol:

Por cierto, Blancanieves y los Siete enanitos, Shrek o Pocahontas, ¿serán considerados como de temática ligeramente erótica o esos sí se podrán ver? Que puestos a ver tonterías, muchos verán dragones en el pasillo. Lo que no sabemos es qué se habrán tomado antes de verlos...

Por último, lo interesante de la noticia no es ni lo de la temática erótica (por mucho que a algunos eso les preocupe sobremanera) ni lo de la temática de misterio y terror. Lo interesante es que prohíben todo producto considerado SUBVERSIVO por el Gobierno: ahora llegamos a lo fundamental... ¿qué se define como subversivo? ¿Una hamburguesa en una película? ¿Alguien con vaqueros Levi's 501? Al fin y al cabo son americanos/occidentales... Y a los chinos lo "occidental" no les gusta mucho... es más también piden appeasement cuando les toca, por otras viñetas que insultan al líder cósmico Mao y lo malo es que se les obedece, . Hasta han definido como subversivo el decir que hay SIDA en China... a pesar de que vive realmente una epidemia muy grave el país. O a un bloguero por escribir contra la corrupción en China, que es algo generalizado y sólo se descubre cuando el corruto cae en desgracia, incluso si tiene esclavos (aquí, aquí):

Y Spielbierg se retira como director artístico de los Juegos Olímpicos de Pekín: aunque me cae fatal (su película Munich es una mierda) y es un progre americano total, hay que aplaudirle por esta decisión. Y el Gobierno chino no está nada de acuerdo: ha dicho que Spielberg ha roto el espíritu olímpico. Ellos lo han roto desde el principio: la condición es que los JJOO sólo se celebrarían si existían Derechos Humanos en China. Y no, no se respetan, ni para los chinos, ni para los extranjeros a quienes no se permite criticar a China. Pero ya se sabe: las promesas sólo son promesas.

Así que: ¿teneis mala publicidad? Pues a aguantarse toca: a ustedes no les gusta lo occidental, a nosotros no nos gustan los dictadores... de cualquier signo que estos sean...

So, China, as a result of being a communist paradise (for some people, it's conservative....) has moved to forbid all terror and mistery films to "protect the psycological development of the children and teenagers of the country", according to a government's ruling published by Shangai's journal Shangai Daily. This measure is adopted after the prohibition to make this kind of films in the country. They will also stop all the vulgar audiovisual products and all the potentially damaging ones for its youth, among them those of soft erotic theme or any product considered subversive by the Government. Books and comics will be ruled by the same measure.

So in the end, it's not the children and teenagers' health the one they are protecting. It's just the Government's one. And, well, that would be the real terror film, this people should forbid: the Communist Government's own existence... By the way, I guess this is a move to protect them from real competence... ;) You know, there's no need to see a terror film in China: you just read the un-censored news, if you can... that is, and you are not detained in the process...

The interesting things is really that piece about the subversive material. What would be considered as subversive? A burger in a film? Someone wearing Levi's 501? They are all American or Western type of things... And Chinese do not really love Western things in general... what is more: they also ask for appeasement when they consider it necessary, for other ads' cartoons that insult their cosmic leader Mao and the worse thing is that they are obeyed... For example, they have defined as subversive that someone speaks about AIDS in China... even when China is living a real and very grave epidemy. Or they have detained on subversive charges a blogger for writing against corruption in China, which is something general and the corrupt is only discovered if he falls in disgrace, even if he owns slaves (here, here):

They have broken that from the beginning: the only condition OIC let them be the home of the Olympics was that they should celebrate in a country were the Human Rights were respected. Well, they aren't, not only for Chinese, but for foreigners going to the Olympics, who are forbidden to critisize China. But you know: promises are only promises.

So, do you have bad publicity??? Well, cope with it... :lol: You don't like Western things, we don't like dictators... whatever the sign of them.

Yahoo!, Google y Microsoft: ese triángulo... empresarial

La compra de Yahoo! por parte de Microsoft no ha sentado nada bien a Google que ha pedido que los reguladores del mercado vigilen escrupulosamente la medida que podía convertir a Microsoft en un monopolio:

In a blog, Google said the tie-up could unfairly limit the ability of consumers to freely access competitors' email and instant messaging services.

It said Microsoft had previously sought "to establish proprietary monopolies".

Pero Microsoft le ha respondido que Google no es pequeño tampoco, que acapara el 75% del mercado.

Ante la carta de David Drummond, de Google, poniendo de manifiesto la amenaza que la operación Microsoft-Yahoo! supone para el futuro de la web y sus principios fundamentales, Brad Smith, de Microsoft, ha contestado afirmando que

Y muchas otras cosas sí, pero eso no. Lo siento, pero eso me resulta un insulto a la inteligencia del lector. Microsoft es la empresa permanentemente empeñada en redefinir los estándares a su antojo, en controlarlos, en evitar el acceso de otros, en utilizar la fuerza de su monopolio para eliminar competencia… ¿Cuántos juicios llevamos ya en este sentido? Microsoft es una empresa comprometida con la destrucción de la apertura, y con la compra de los ideales a golpe de talonario siempre que ha podido para evitar responder ante los tribunales de defensa de la competencia.

De Google podremos decir muchas cosas, y algunas de ellas muy inquietantes, pero por el momento no tiene el precedente siniestro de lo que Microsoft ha hecho con el mercado del PC.

Hmm, tan comprometida con la apertura que si compras un PC, te dan el Windows, sí o sí, salvo que pidas expresamente un Dell con Linux. O sea que NO.

Mientras los empleados de Yahoo! no están muy contentos porque piensan que se les acaba su cultura del "amor a la diversión" si al final son absorbidos por Microsoft: Yahoos fear loss of fun-loving culture | Tech News on ZDNet:

Pero no hay que desesperar: Google, que no está nada interesado en que Microsoft le quite parte del pastel, ya ha ofrecido un acuerdo a Yahoo!:

Google’s lobbyists in Washington have also begun plotting how it might present a case against the transaction to lawmakers, people briefed on the company’s plans said. Google could benefit by simply prolonging a regulatory review until after the next president takes office.

En ZDNet News se preguntan si Microsoft no se habrá precipitado y habrá elegido mal la compañía:

Todos sabemos que esto simplemente por los buscadores. Pero Yahoo! es sólo un pobre nº 2 al lado de Google. Y Google gana no por sus algoritmos de búsqueda. Gana porque da respuestas inmediatas por menos que sus rivales. Por su fibra negra, por las granjas de servidores de bajo coste, procesamiento paralelo y bases de datos clónicas.

Veremos cómo acaba este triángulo... empresarial...

Microsoft quiere comprar Yahoo!

BBC NEWS | Business |: Sin duda la noticia financiera de la semana. Se enmarca dentro de la guerra en Internet que mantienen Google y Microsoft, sobre todo desde que Google compró writely e inició los "Google Documents". De hecho la modificación de Microsoft y su transformación en Windows Live, tiene mucho que ver con el temor de que Google le supere.

"Microsoft has offered to buy the search engine company Yahoo for $44.6bn (22.4bn pounds) in cash and shares.

The offer, contained in a letter to Yahoo's board, is 62% above Yahoo's closing share price on Thursday.

Yahoo cut its revenue forecasts earlier this week and said it would have to spend an additional $300m this year trying to revive the company.

It has been struggling in recent years to compete with Google, which has also been a competitor to Microsoft."

Los expertos consideraron que la regulación de empleo inciada por Yahoo! esta misma semana como un indicio de que algo iba a pasar.

En cuanto a las consecuencias para la libertad en la blogosfera, la concentración de empresas no augura nada halagüeño. Tanto Yahoo! como Microsoft (y Google) han entregado al Gobierno chino datos de ciberdisidentes para poder continuar sus operaciones en el país.

Veremos cómo termina esta compra...

En Australia, la libertad de Internet está bajo amenaza

Traduzco un post de Midnight Sun porque es muy importante su contenido y no es muy largo:

The time for Australian bloggers is drawing nigh, folks, with our new prime minister, control freak, socialist Kevin Rudd moving in to censor the Australian internet under the guise of saving the children from pornography. But considering that Conservative Australian journalists have suddenly come under threat in the new Rudd era, I would say that with the new law in place, PC and Labor agenda driven policy will find its way into the legislations.

Australian Telecommunications Minister Stephen Conroy today announced a requirement for ISPs to provide a “clean feed” for all homes, schools and any public PCs accessible by children. This follows up on a pre-election Nov. 19th Labor Party press release which first announced a proposed Cyber-safety plan.

As the press release said, “A Rudd Labor Government will transform cyber-safety in Australia,” and here we are. So, is Australia the new China?

Poco han tardado los laboristas, recientemente ganadores de las elecciones en Australia, en imponer una ley restrictiva de Internet, con la excusa de que es para luchar contra la pornografía infantil. Soy la primera que aborrece la pornografía en general, por cosificar a las personas (pero si son mayores de edad, están en su derecho) y la de menores en particular. Pero establecer una medida por la que todos los PC's que puedan ser usados por menores (cualquiera, lo que incluyen los de casa...) tengan IPs filtradas, como que da miedito. ¿Quién me garantiza a mí que las IPs sean sólo las de pornografía infantil y no otras que se les cuelen porque sean de alguien cuyas ideas no les caigan bien?

So are we going to believe that the webpages filtered are only the ones who contain child pornography? Don't take us for idiots at this stage...

Censorship in Spain

A Judge has ordered to forbid the access of several webs, which are critical with Catalan nationalism, to the public in Spain. The reason is that they are asking the citizens to buy products from other Spanish regions (which are more needed of inversion and of economic growing than Catalonia) as a result of the rejection of a part of Catalonian society to continue being Spanish.

This is only a provisional measure as the judicial process is now in its first steps. The webs, some of them inactive are: Stop Nacionalismo, Boicot Ya, Stopnacionalismos, Nacionalismo No, El Boicot, Catalanes No Gracias, Hasta Los Huevos (both the .com and the blog to which that .com redirects you) and Estatuto.

It is a paradox, but Catalanist webs (the most important of which is Omnium Cultural) which are asking to boycott the products of another parts of Spain or of Catalan products which were not labelled in Catalan (that is, it was made in Spanish), are not closed or even temporarily disabled.

One of them is our colleague, HLH: he himself writes about it in his blog. Others writing about this Anghara, EL Cerrajero, HDZP and Prevost.

[+] By the way, the nationalist Catalan Government has already achieved something: Catalonia is the part of Spain where schoolboys and schoolgirls have already the worst results in education of all Spain.

La nueva Ley de conservación de datos de las comunicaciones electrónicas (+)

Ya escribí antes aquí que el Partido Popular había presentado una enmienda a la Ley sobre conservación de datos de las comunicaciones electrónicas que no había gustado a nadie. Pues bien, si quereis ver el resto de la ley (que es una trasposición de la Directiva UE correspondiente) y echaros a llorar por la que se nos viene encima, podeis ir este post de Disculpen las Molestias -lo siento, ahora no sale-:

     • telefonía móvil: números de teléfono de origen y destino, IMSI e IMEI del emisor y del receptor; si se trata de una tarjeta prepago también se guardarán la fecha y hora de la primera activación y la celda (desde qué estación se hizo)
     • acceso a internet, correo electrónico y telefonía por internet: número de teléfono de origen, línea DSL u otro punto terminal identificador
  6. para identificar la localización del equipo de comunicación móvil:
     • identificador de celda, datos que permiten fijar la localización geográfica de la celda
• También se guardarán los datos referidos a las llamadas infructuosas pero no los relativos a llamadas no conectadas.
• Los datos se almacenarán durante 12 meses aunque esto pueda variar entre seis meses y dos años, al finalizar este periodo los datos deben ser borrados (menos aquellos que hayan sido cedidos).
• Podrán acceder a estos datos los agentes facultados pertenecientes a las fuerzas y cuerpos de seguridad cuando actúen como policía judicial, el personal del centro nacional de inteligencia y los funcionarios de la dirección adjunta de vigilancia aduanera previa orden judicial.

Maravilloso, ¿eh? Especialmente "tranquilizador" es lo del centro nacional de inteligencia considerando todos los antecedentes.... Miedo me da cómo van a usar esta ley los julays mencionados...

I blogged some days ago about a modification which was announced by Popular Party to the Law about the conservation of data from the electronic communications which wanted to oblige all the cibercafes and the telecommunications’ operators to carry on a registry of the identity of all the users. But the rest of the law (a transposition from one of the EU's Directives) is even worse. It obliges to register:

1. to identify and search for the origin of a communication: whatever the class of your phone: your number, name and address and if you're surfing the Net, using the e-mail or Internet phone/VoiP: identification of the user, name and address of the user.
2. to identify the destiny of a communication: if you're on the phone, its number and the name and address of the user and, when using the e-mail and VoiP services, identification of the user, phone number, name and address of the user.
3. to identify the day, time and duration of a communication: if you're on the phone, the day and time it begins and finishes and when surfing the net, using e-mail and VoiP, the day and time of the connection and of its end.
4. to identify the type of communication: if you're on the phone, the phone service you use, and if you're on the internet or using your e-mail, the internet service/provider used.
5. to identify the communication equipment: if you're on the traditional phone, your number and the destination one. If you're on a mobile phone, the phone number of origin and of destination, IMSI and IMEI of both users, and if it's a pre-paid card phone the dara of the day and time of the first activation and where it was made will also be registered. And lasting when surfing, using the e-mail and VoiP services, the number of original phone, DSL or any other terminal which could be identified.
6. to identify the localization of a mobile communication equipment: the cell's identification, which could let locate the cell geographically.

All of these data will be conserved for 12 months but in some cases it can vary to 6 months or 2 years, when those periods end the data should be erased, except if they have been given to the "authority". And who is the authority? "Agents from the Police and security forces when they are acting as judicial police, the guys working at the intelligence center and the civil servants from the joint direction of the customs office, previous court order".

Artículo 4
Acceso a los datos
Los Estados miembros adoptarán medidas para garantizar que los datos conservados de conformidad con la presente Directiva solamente se proporcionen a las autoridades nacionales competentes, en casos específicos y de conformidad con la legislación nacional. Cada Estado miembro definirá en su legislación nacional el procedimiento que deba seguirse y las condiciones que deban cumplirse para tener acceso a los datos conservados de conformidad con los requisitos de necesidad y proporcionalidad, de conformidad con las disposiciones pertinentes del Derecho de la Unión o del Derecho internacional público, y en particular el CEDH en la interpretación del Tribunal Europeo de Derechos Humanos.

La cuestión pues no es sólo española. Es europea. También en Italia están protestando por una ley semejante h/t Kate. Y consideran que será el fin de la red… porque allí además van a obligar a todos los blogueros a no bloguear anónimamente, si no que estarán obligados a registrarlos en un registro de la Autoridad de la Comunicación, obtener un certificado, etc….

La legge Levi-Prodi prevede che chiunque abbia un blog o un sito debba registrarlo al ROC, un registro dell’Autorità delle Comunicazioni, produrre dei certificati, pagare un bollo, anche se fa informazione senza fini di lucro.

London-based Burmese blogger Ko Htike said he is getting nothing over the internet from his contacts in Burma and that he can no longer reach them by mobile phone.

He told the BBC News website that he can occasionally reach people in Burma on landline telephones, but even this is sporadic.

BBC sources in Burma have said that international mobile phone signals have been interrupted and soldiers are searching people for cameras and mobile phones.

Satellites images may show Burmese Junta Abuses:

Images collected over the last year focused on sites in eastern Myanmar, helping document reports of villages being burned or eliminated, new villages where people had been relocated and rapidly expanding military camps, Lars Bromley of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, said Friday.

Japan will investigate the death of the Japanese video journalist Kengi Nagai:

Japan is sending its deputy foreign minister to Burma to investigate the death of a Japanese journalist, who was covering the anti-government protests.

Japan said it would review its aid programmes to Burma over the fatal shooting of Kenji Nagai on Thursday.

TV footage has emerged which raises the possibility that the 50-year-old may have been deliberately targeted rather than caught in police cross-fire.

Troops take back control in Burma:

Soldiers and police took control of the streets Friday, firing warning shots and tear gas to scatter the few pro-democracy protesters who ventured out as Myanmar’s military junta sealed off Buddhist monasteries and cut public Internet access.

On the third day of a harsh government crackdown, the streets were empty of the mass gatherings that had peacefully challenged the regime daily for nearly two weeks, leaving only small groups of activists to be chased around by security forces.

“Bloodbath again! Bloodbath again!” a Yangon resident yelled while watching soldiers break up one march by shooting into air, firing tear gas and beating people with clubs.

Thousands of monks had provided the backbone of the protests, but they were besieged in their monasteries, penned in by locked gates and barbed wire surrounding the compounds in the two biggest cities, Yangon and Mandalay. Troops stood guard outside and blocked nearby roads to keep the clergymen isolated.

Many Yangon residents seemed pessimistic over the crackdown, fearing it fatally weakened a movement that began nearly six weeks ago as small protests over fuel price hikes and grew into demonstrations by tens of thousands demanding an end to 45 years of military rule.

[…]Much of the regime’s defiance — and ability to withstand economic sanctions imposed by the West — stems from the diplomatic and financial support of neighboring China. Another neighbor, India, also has refrained from pressuring the junta.

Analysts say that as long as those two giant countries remain silent and other Southeast Asian countries keep investing in Myanmar, it is unlikely the junta will show any flexibility. Every other time the regime has been challenged by its own people, it has responded with force.

Como ya escribí ayer, han cortado el acceso a Internet y los móviles tampoco funcionan.

La Junta está tratando de echar la culpa de las protestas a las cadenas extranjeras, incluida la BBC, a los que tacha de “destruccionistas“.

Los bloggers están preocupados: hasta ahora han sido ellos los que han permitido una difusión rápida de las imágenes de la brutalidad de la Junta, pero con las nuevas restricciones es posible que no obtengan muchas más. Por último, Japón va a investigar la muerte del video-reportero Kenji Nagai, que, según las imágenes de la TV, fue deliberadamente escogido y asesinado, y no murió por fuego cruzado.

Asimismo, han amenazado con revisar todos sus programas de ayuda al desarrollo que tengan con Birmania.

Hace escasamente una hora han informado de que los militares tienen otra vez el control sobre el país, después de que hayan cercado los monasterios, alrededor de los cuales han colocado alambre de púas y hay soldados, y hayan suspendido Internet.

Hay pesimismo en Rangún.

(…) Burmese bloggers have been crucial whistleblowers and eyewitnesses to history–supplying the world with round-the-clock coverage and photos of their oppressive regime’s crackdown. Now, just as the Western press is lauding their role, the military junta has reportedly cut off Internet access:

Myanmar’s government appeared to have cut public Internet access and troops occupied key Buddhist monasteries on Friday, witnesses and diplomats said, in an effort to end demonstrations against the ruling junta.

The moves raised concerns that the military government may be preparing to intensify a crackdown on civilians that has killed at least 10 people in the past two days. The Internet in particular has played a crucial role in getting news and images of the pro-democracy protests to the outside world.

According to AFP, government officials are blaming a “damaged underwater cable.”

After two days of unrest in Yangon’s streets, Myanmar’s main link to the Internet has stopped working, according to a telecom official who blamed the problem on a damaged cable.

“The Internet is not working because the underwater cable is damaged,” an official with Myanmar Post and Telecoms told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Myanmar’s Internet service is tightly controlled and only sporadically available even in the best of times, but the military has tightened its controls amid anti-government protests.

In Bangkok, an official at a Thai telecom that provides satellite services to Myanmar also said some Internet service inside the country had been cut.

One western source inside Myanmar said she had not been able to access emails or Internet since late morning.

The professor Desmond Ball, from the Center of Strategic Studies and Defense from the University of Universidad de Canberra –who has published a book about the Burmese spies–, underlined that “the intelligence services and the security forces have tapped all the telecommunications’ systems of the country”.

In Burma, having a non-declared radio-phone means detention and whoever is surprised with a satellite phone is charged with “high treason” and condemned to a minimum punishment of 20 years in prison. Moreover, to use a PC, you must have an special license from the Communications and Mail Ministry. Infringing that law means a punishment between seven to fifteen years in prison. In this country, there are only a dozen cybercafes with limited access to Internet.

In every hotel of Rangoon and in other cities, the phone calls are intercepted without even considering that can be known by the speaker and, if the stablishment’s internet service is used, it will record it to their archives. The ordinary Burmese say that the military regime has “eyes and ears” everywhere. They know that the powerful Intelligence Service pays not only military men, but also beggars, street sellers, hotel receptionists, office workers, monks, taxi drivers and students, among others.

La verdad, lo de los memes me parece una tontería - no sirve más que para perder el tiempo. Pero por llevar la contraria a Prevost, voy a ser muy breve.

1. prensa escrita: no compro. Me parece un gasto tonto en papel y dinero habiendo internet. ;)
2. radio: no tengo tiempo. Mi programa favorito es El Gato al Agua de Intereconomía, que procuro oír (y ver por la TV, ver siguiente punto) cuando puedo.
3. TV: Sólo veo CSI y alguna otra serie parecida y tampoco con mucha asiduidad. De las noticias y demás nada, salvo El Gato al Agua -normalmente lo veo por internet- cuando tengo tiempo.
4. Internet: ehto zí. Tengo alrededor de 200 blogs en RSS Bandit, programa maravilloso, gratis y con mucha capacidad y con el que puedo configurar WLW, para bloguear automáticamente (*) -no me gustan ni bloglines ni google reader-. Además, leo varios agregadores tanto españoles (antizp, BPR o redliberal) y extranjeros (tocqueville, triares y Dumb OX Bloggregator -estos dos últimos se ven en mi blog). Ahh, y también leo los que tengo en el blogsurfer interno de wordpress.com. En esto tengo épocas, no leo todos los blogs todos los días -si no ya me habían internado-, si no que veo los temas más importantes -o menos blogueados- y los posteo. Por supuesto, también leo aquellos blogs comunitarios en los que escribo: IBA, MNM, Freedom's Zone y Hyscience.

Ahh, y vuelvo a repetir: no me gustan los memes (me parece que estoy haciendo el memo). :D

Islamic bycicles: the new strategy of Iran

Well, our beloved Ahmadinejad said that in Iran, "women's rights are more respected than men's". That is why they are now issuing an "Islamic bycicle" for women:

At the same time, the Iranian regime continues to crackdown on the feminist movement in Iran with no aid from feminists throughout the world.

Despite the constant harassment of its members, the Iranian feminist movement is growing and is alarming the government," Reporters Without Borders said in a statement. "The Internet is now a battle-ground between these women, who are just demanding the same rights as men, and a regime that remains as rigid as ever."

The series of arrests are an indication that the small progress that had been made under the former reformist president Mohammad Khatami is now being rolled back by his successor, the hard-liner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, since he was elected in 2005.

The Iranian police are also ramping up their inspections of women to ensure they are adhering to the Islamic dress code. The annual spring offensive to make sure women are covering up enough has been particularly strict this year. And the government in Tehran is now drafting a law to limit female students to half the places in college, instead of the 65 percent they currently occupy.

At the same time, Iran can be as close as 12 months away to gaining the ability to produce the nuclear bomb.

Iran has also jailed an Iranian-American journalist who converted from Islam to Judaism and also a top blogger, who is accused of ... being a spy!

But the most outstanding measure of idiocy in Iran is that they are also arresting DOGS!! (here). And they are also confiscating cars for carrying the dog inside h/t Gateway Pundit.

Lastly, men and women will be separated at hospitals. h/t Stefania.

Iranian health minister Kamran Bagheri Lamkarani has presented a reform under which men and women would be divided in public hospitals under a new moralization campaign which kicked off last month. Under the new provisions, women would be treated only by female doctors and nurses and male patients would only be in contact with medics of the same gender. This follows a rigid interpretation of Sharia law which forbids physical contact between men and women.

A major problem with this change is the higher number of male medics compared to women, although 67 percent of medical students in Iran are today women. However, the ministry has said the change could be gradual.

China: not progressing on Human Rights

According to the new report from Amnesty International, China has not fulfilled its promise to protect Human Rights for the Olympics Game of 2008:

The report catalogs a wide range of persistent abuses, from extensive use of detention without trial to the persecution of civil rights activists and new methods to rein in the domestic media and censor the Internet.
The London-based group welcomed the new rules for foreign journalists and the referral of all death sentences to China's Supreme Court since the start of the year. "Disappointingly, they have been matched by moves to expand detention without trial and house arrest of activists, and by a tightening of controls over domestic media and the Internet," Catherine Baber, deputy Asia-Pacific director of Amnesty International, said in a statement.
China's Foreign Ministry in a statement Monday rejected the report, saying the government was improving its legal system and promoting democracy. "We are conscientiously fulfilling our promise for the Olympics. ... The progress China has achieved in human rights cannot be slandered by a report from an individual organization with political prejudice," the statement said.

What is more AI denounces China is using the Olympics to increase its pressure on dissidents:

A report by the group welcomed some reforms, but criticised China's detentions without trial and tightened control of the media and the internet.

Precisely the limits imposed on freedom of speech are one of the more worrying. And internet is precisely one of the places were it is more limites. MySpace is already on in Chinese internet... with some restrictions:

Attempts to post on topics that are deemed inappropriate by the Chinese Government will result in the message: "Sorry, the article you want to publish may contain inappropriate content. Please delete the unsuitable content, and then try reposting it. Thank you." Even searching for blacklisted keywords results in the same warning.

Long Xinmin, rewarded with the Légion d'Honneur at the French Embassy in Beijing, is a dignitary of the Chinese regime. He is the chief of the censorship administration, an administration that controls all newspapers, television and, of course, the Chinese Internet. It does not hesitate to send to prison those who do not respect the strict rules of the propaganda. Officially, Mr. Long has received the medal for being a francophile. But even inside the communist party, he's considered as a hardliner, a conservative that has recently been harsher with Chinese bloggers.

Canada has been assured that China had not tortured Canadian citizen Huseyin Celil, a Canadian citzen accused by Chinese authorities of "separating China" and "organizing, leading and participating in terrorist groups, organizations". I wonder if they would be soooo worried if this Canadian citizen was Christian, Jewish or Buddhist...

We will also see if Al Gore sells any of his videos to China, as the pollution there is growing rapidly: it will be this year the more important polluter:

Currently, 16 of the 20 most polluted cities in the world are located in China, and it is the second largest emitter of energy-related carbon dioxide after the United States. China relies on coal for 70 percent of its energy needs, and discharges a large amount of pollutants into its rivers. The increase of the economy's energy demands is also the cause of higher greenhouse gas levels, as many Chinese companies build coal-fired plants and operate them without the government's consent.

Rich Chinese fancy expensive cars. The most exclusive car brands are among those experiencing the fastest growth. Jenny Zheng, Rolls-Royce's general manager for greater China, says the company's China sales jumped more than 60% last year from the year before. She says China overtook Japan for the first time in 2006, though she declined to cite actual figures. Globally, the brand has sold 805 cars, each one tailor-made to the owner's demands, she says. Well, this is logical considering that China is communist... or not?

China moves to restrict lending.
Thousands of Chinese mines and cement workers are dying each year from breathing of coal and cement dust. "The lung disease known as "black lung" or pneumoconiosis accounts for three quarters of all occupational deaths, health officials said. China's coal mines are the most deadly in the world. An average of 17 miners are killed in mining accidents each day, the official People's Daily newspaper reports. Independent labour groups believe the death toll is much higher". "Of 677,000 occupational disease cases reported in China since the 1950s, more than 90% were pneumoconiosis cases, health ministry spokesperson Su Zhi said. Last year alone, the black lung disease accounted for 76% of the 11,000 new occupational disease cases reported. 621 of the pneumoconiosis cases reported last year involved workers under the age of 18".

Un informe de Amnistía Internacional vuelve a denunciar que China sigue sin respetar los derechos humanos, a pesar de haber prometido hacerlo para la inauguración de los Juegos Olímpicos. Entre otras cosas, el informe denuncia las detenciones sin juicio y las restricciones a la libertad de expresión, así como que parece que se está aprovchando precisamente los JJOO para incrementar la presión sobre los disidentes.

Por supuesto, China lo ha negado diciendo que "los evidentes procesos en materia de Derechos Humano van a ser dismiuidos en importancia por una organizacion con prejuicios políticos".

Sin embargo,las restricciones en Internet continúan: ahora es MySpace la que tiene un filtro que impide postear material considerado "no apropiado", de tal forma que si no lo quitas el post no puedes postearlo.

Eso sí, Francia ha concedido al censor mayor de ... la Republica Popular China la legion de Honor, porque es "muy francófilo". Y mientras Canadá está muy aliviada después de que las autoridades chinas hayan asegurado que no han torturado a un ciudadano canadiense, acusado de intentar separar China y de "pertenecer a organizaciones subversivas, terroristas o semejantes". El ciudadano en cuestión es musulmán, y, considerando loable que defiendan a sus ciudadanos, habría que preguntrse si hubieran mantenido la misma postura, si Husiyen Celil hubiera pertenecido a otra religión.

Asimismo, China -al igual que EEUU, pero ya veremos quién es más criticado- consideran poco fiable un informe sobre la contaminación, al convertirse China este mismo año en el mayor contaminador del mundo. Ya de las 2o capitales más contaminadas, 16 están en China.

Y, para terminar, a los chinos ricos les molan los coches caros (la firma Rolls-Royce ha anunciado que este año han aumentado un 60% sus ventas) mientras las 3/4 partes de los mineros o trabajadores del cemento mueren anualmente de "pulmón blanco". Sólo el año pasado, el 76% de los trabajadores con enfermedades han muerto por esta causa. 621 eran de menores de 18 años.

Jihad Online: Islamists recruiting in Spain, supporters rising in Cataluña

Según las informaciones recabadas por El Confidencial Digital, los Mossos d'Esquadra investigan a una organización islamista sunní denominada Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami (HuT) –o Partido de la Liberación Islámica-. Grupos islamistas de este perfil están proliferando en Internet para ganar seguidores, que incluso puedan ser reclutados por el yihadismo radical.

HuT nace en Jerusalén en 1953 de la mano del palestino Taqiuddin al-Nabhani. Promulga la reinstauración de un macroestado islámico o califato formado por todos los países de mayoría musulmana. Sus adeptos rechazan la democracia occidental y pretenden en último lugar que el mundo se convierta al Islam. La organización no ha condenado explícitamente los atentados de origen yihadista.

En España, este grupo islamista comenzó su actividad durante el período 2004-2005 y, en febrero de 2006, coincidiendo con la crisis de las viñetas de Mahoma, HuT incrementa su actividad y presencia tanto física como a través de Internet.

Según los expertos islamistas Javier Jordán y Sol Tarrés, que han trazado para jihadmonitor.org un perfil sobre estos movimientos, las principales características de este colectivo son las siguientes:

--Suelen residir o proceder en su mayoría de las Comunidad Autónomas situadas al norte de España.

--Se trata de personas con un nivel de instrucción medio, medio-alto, con cualificación profesional y con un elevado conocimiento del Islam, así como una práctica rigurosa del mismo.

--Hasta mediados de marzo de 2007 el contacto principal entre estos adeptos que se alojan principalmente en Barcelona se mantenía por correo electrónico privado a través de un foro islamista en español. El sitio web estaba alojado en Kuwait. Simpatizaban con HuT entre treinta y cuarenta participantes del foro. Más de la mitad, mujeres. Tras su puesta en marcha, la Guardia Civil montó una operación contra dos jóvenes que mantenían sitios web de contenido islamista radical. Inmediatamente, el foro citado dejó de operar.

Según los mismos expertos, las líneas de actuación en Internet de este grupo se concretan de la siguiente manera:

--Participación activa en los foros, listas de distribución y grupos de Internet (incluidos las chiitas de habla hispana), tanto los de temática principalmente religiosa como social o política. Los foros y grupos son seleccionados en virtud a la cantidad de personas inscritas en ellos y la actividad del grupo; asimismo se presta especial atención a los grupos de mujeres conversas al Islam en los que predomina la orientación salafí.

--Enviar periódicamente y de manera simultánea noticias relativas al mundo islámico a los foros y grupos donde participan. Los miembros de HuT hacen especial hincapié en aquellas noticias relativas a Irak y Afganistán, a la actuación de las tropas occidentales sobre la población civil, imágenes cruentas de los atentados terroristas (personas mutiladas, niños muertos...), etc. Se trata, en definitiva, de estimular el rechazo al ‘imperialismo occidental’ (más concretamente de Israel y Estados Unidos).

--Introducir recurrentemente en los foros y grupos la temática del Califato, y la obligación islámica de luchar por la consecución del mismo. Esto se realiza bien abriendo un hilo de conversación directamente sobre el tema, o bien insertándolo sistemáticamente en otros hilos.

--Aprovechar los momentos de tensión entre musulmanes y no-musulmanes en Europa para concienciar y adoctrinar en la teoría del Califato. Cuando la tensión se relaja, la pauta es publicar famas relativas a la situación de los musulmanes en sociedades no islámicas. Reproducen dichas famas en inglés o traducidas al castellano, y se extraen tanto de las páginas de web asociadas a HuT, como de las consideradas fiables, en su mayoría de orientación salafí.

 According to the reports gathered by El Confidencial Digital, the Mossos d'Esquadra are investigating the Sunni Islamist organization named Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami (HuT) –or Party for the Islamic Liberation-. The number of Islamist groups of this kind is rising on the Internet, and using the WWW to gain supporters, that could be even recruited by the radical Islamism.

HuT was born in Jerusalem in 1953 founded by the Palestinian Taqiuddin al-Nabhani. They are supporters of an Islamic macroState or Caliphate formed by all the countries whose citizens are, mostly, Muslims. Its supporters reject  Western democracy and pretend as a final goal, that the whole world is converted to Islam. The organization has never condemned explicitly any of the terrorist attacks of a Jihadist origin.

In Spain, this Islamist group began its activity during the period 2004-2005 and, in Feb. 2006, when the Mohammen cartoon crisis was happenning, HuT raises its activity and presence both physical and in Internet.

Accrding to the Islamism expert Javier Jordán y Sol Tarrés, who had described for  jihadmonitor.org these movements, the main characteristics of this gruop are:

1. they normally live in the Autonomous Communities situated in the north of Spain.
2. they are people with a middle, middle-high, grade of education, with professional qualification and with a high knowledge of Islam, and very strict following of its rules.
3. Till March 2007, the main way of contacting these supporters is the private e-mail through an Islamist forum in Internet (www[dot]islamenlinea[dot]com/foro]. This web page is based on Kuwait. There were more between 30 and 40 sympathisers of HuT in that forum. Más de la mitad, mujeres. The Civil Guard conducted an opertation against other 2 youths, which maintained web sites with a radical Islamist content. Inmediately, the mentioned forum was closed.

According to the same experts, there are also common characteristics of the way this supporters act in Internet:

1. Active participation in forums, e-mailing lists and Internet groups (including the Spanish-speaking Shiites), both in religious and social or political subjects. The forums and groups are selected considering the number of people registered and how active they are; they are also considering specially the groups of women converted to Islam the majority of which have a Salafist orientation.
2. They also sent periodically and simultaneously news related to Islamic world to forums and groups where they take part. The members of HuT insist especially on the news related to Irak y Afganistán, to the Western troops behaviour against the civil population, very hard photos of the terrorist attacks (maimed people, dead children, etc.). They are just stimulating the reject against the "Western imperialism" (specially against Israel and USA).
3. They also introduce once and again in forums and groups the Caliphate subject and the Islamic obligation to fight for that objective.
4. They normally use the moments of tension betwen Muslim and non-Muslim communities to raise a concience and to indoctrinate people in the Caliphate theory. When the situation relaxes a bit, they normally publish news related to the situation of Muslims in non-Muslim societies. They reproduce them both in English or in Spanish, and they normally copy them from webpages associated with HuT, or with the ones considered truthful, the majority of which are Salafist.

Sin embargo, el análisis de este tipo de movimientos debe ser prospectivo. El alcance de las actividades de HuT podría ser mucho mayor en el periodo temporal 2010-2020, con al menos dos o tres millones de musulmanes en España, y con ciertos sectores receptivos a su mensaje tras la labor que ya vienen realizando en las comunidades españolas grupos como la Yama’a al-Tabligh o Justicia y Espiritualidad, y que para entonces será previsiblemente más amplia."

The study ends saying that "Fortunately, the presence of HuT in Spain is very little, except in Cataluña. But [...] range of their activities in the period 2010-2020, with 2 or 3 millions of Muslims in Spain, and with some sectors of them very receptive to their message, after the work which are doing in Spanish communities, groups like Yama’a al-Tabligh o Justicia y Espiritualidad, work which presumably will have a broader range in that period".

And after yesterday, I blogged about the possible conversion to Islam of the general coordinator of Izquierda Unida, Gaspar Llamazares, we have known today that his party is denouncing Popular Party because of the defense this party makes of the "values from the Christian humanism from the Western tradition", asking how on earth this party can defend Muslims.

They also point out: "according to Aznar (PP), who Juan Vivas (PP) wants to name as Honorable Son of Ceuta, Muslims should ask for forgiveness for the 8 centuries of Al-Andalus". [in fact the Spanish grammar is not very correct in the panflet...].

En el Blog Jihadi du Jour hacen referencia a los consejos recogidos en el foro Al Mohajroon. En él se dice: "No hay ninguna duda, mis hermanos, que poner muchos mensajes en los foros americanos es uno de los más importantes medios de obtener [la] victoria en la muy fiera guerra de medios y de influir en los puntos de vista de los mentecatos americanos que pagan sus impuestos para que vayan al Ejército americano infiel. Este americano es un idiota que ni siquiera sabe dónde está Irak. Es por tanto obligatorio que todos los muyaidines electrónicos se pogan a trabajar en esta guerra.

[...] Debeis inventar historias que [presuntamente] conoceis casos personalmente de personas que se han ido a Iraq y se han suicidado mientras estaban sirviendo en el ejército ya sea colgándose o disparándose".
